Are You Eating More Sugar Than You Think?

The ingredient list is the most important piece of text on a product’s packaging. Why? Because it shows everything you are about to put into your lovely body.

Unfortunately some companies use label manipulation. For example, manufacturers often alter their ingredients lists to make it seem like their products have lesser quantities of certain ingredients.

It happens so often with sugars. Companies use "ingredient splitting," including more than one kind of sweetener like cane sugar, corn syrup, beet sugar, fructose, and so on. Since each one splits the total amount of sugar, they appear further down so that healthier ingredients get listed first.

Take Heinz Ketchup for instance, a favorite in restaurants everywhere. The first ingredient is Tomato Concentrate, but look closer. Just behind Vinegar are two types of sugar: High Fructose Corn Syrup and Corn Syrup. Combined Corn Syrup should be second on the list! Just a tablespoon contains a sugar cube worth of sweetening.

Be aware of products with more than one kind of sugar. They may be less healthy than they appear!
