Do you think almonds are nuts? Well, scientifically speaking they are closer to peach pits. Almonds are the fruit of deciduous (means leaves fall off every year) trees originally found in Asia and North Africa. Instead of growing a sweet yummy pulp around the seed, almonds grow a tough coating.
Almonds contain lots of nutrients and healthy fats, fiber, protein, magnesium and vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which helps in preventing cell damage and also helps protect against the sun's rays. In addition to helping cells produce energy and protein, magnesium counters the effects of stress hormones which can make you age faster and have acne.
The HEALTH BENEFITS of almonds include lower blood sugar levels and insulin after meals, reduced blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. They can also reduce hunger and promote WEIGHT LOSS . Although nuts are high in fat, frequent nut eaters are thinner on average than those who almost never consume nuts.
Almonds are rich in folic acid and therefore beneficial for pregnant women, as it prevents the risk of birth defects in a baby. Folic acid also reduces the chances of cervical cancer.
But like with all the foods you have to be careful and don’t overdo it because nuts can be hard on your digestive system. If you have a weak digestive system and are prone to digestive disorders, you should control your almond intake. One way to handle this is by drinking lots of water.
